Talitha Cumi – Daughter Arise from the sleep of Death

TEXT: Mark 5: 22-43

Have you ever experienced a situation that was at the point of death, for which you had hope it will be restored to life but the process of waiting on God seemed too long, therefore death occurred?

The story is told in Mark 5:22-43 of one of the rulers of the synagogue name Jairus who went to Jesus for help because his daughter at the age of twelve (12) years was at the point of death. There was a sense of urgency as the text states Jairus prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and begged Him earnestly to go and lay His hands on the girl so that she may be healed and live. However, on the journey to Jairus’ home, there were some delays as Jesus had to stop to deal with the issues of others which included the woman with the issue of blood for twelve (12) years. While He was dealing with the woman with the issue of blood persons from Jairus’ home arrived with the news that his daughter had died, therefore, they need not bother Jesus any more. Apparently Jesus stayed too long. I like Jesus’ response to what he overheard. He ignored what they said, turned to Jairus and told him, “Be not afraid, only believe”.

You may ask, “How can I not be afraid and only believe when the situation that was at the point of death is now dead? Can this situation live again? I have learnt some valuable keys from this text that I would like to share with you.

v. 22: In the midst of trouble you first have to trust Jesus.

v. 24: You must know that Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you.

v. 25-34: You need to understand that the fruit of the Spirit must be cultivated in your life.  You have to have patience and learn to wait on the Lord, being of good courage for God will strengthen your heart.

v. 35: You have to be confident that God can do anything. Nothing is too difficult for God to do. You cannot limit Him.

You must not allow people to detour you. You need to have your own faith and this faith must be in the True and Living God (Mark 11).  The God kind of faith.

v. 36: God provides peace, which surpasses all understanding. The words “fear not” appear in the Bible 366 times – one for each day of the year.

v. 37: You cannot take every body with you where God wants to take you. There are those who will hinder you so you must let them go and know it is okay.

v. 38: You need not get pulled into what the crowd is doing. For it is all some kind of fad (for a day). God always has a remnant – everybody is not doing or involved with what seems to be the “in thing”.

v. 39: You have to be God conscious and call those things that be not as though they were.

v. 40: You have to learn how to surround yourself with spiritual, positive, serious people.  Nevertheless, you need not only depend on these people for your happiness but you need to learn how to encourage yourself in the Lord at times.

v. 42: 1.Arose and walk speak of action.  God wants you to arise.
           2. God expects result from a mature child of God. He has expectation of you. Finally,

v. 43: Recognise that everybody does not have to be in your business.  You must not look for people to pat you on the back when you do something good.  Whatever you do must be done unto God.  You must be confident that God always provides for His own. You must have assurance when you dwell in God’s presence.

This week, it is my prayer for you that you will hear Jesus’ voice commanding you to arise from you sleep of death. That every dead situation in your life will come back to life again. That you will not be afraid though the situations are difficult but you will only believe that with Him all thing are possible if you believe.

May God bless you!
